Round tiered cake pans are a mandatory tool for the amateur baker's pantry. They can be as simple as a set of different sized springform pans, but it is certainly a must. Due to their versatility, I want to explain a few of the great things that you can do with them.
The first and most common thing to do with round tiered cake pans is to directly stack them on top of each other. If you are only using three or four different sizes, you can stack them in creative ways instead of the generic one centered on top of the other. Just be sure that if you stack them offset like this, you make it dramatic enough that it doesn't just look like a crappy stacking job. When stacking cakes like this, they should be secured into the cake below so that they don't slide around. I like to use plastic dowels, but you can get a way with a straw or a pen tube, just be sure that you know where they're at so you don't cut into them.
If you want to make something more elegant, you can use tiered cake stands to stretch the cake to all time heights. When doing this, you have to be very careful to center the cake on the one below. If they aren't centered, the cake will have no balance and it can topple over! This is the common design for wedding cakes, but it can be used for any sort of baking application.
Round tiered cake pans have so many uses that you have to have a set of them. They will get much more use than you think, and after you get the hang of stacking them you will be creating creative and elegant cakes with minimal work.
